Fitness studio owners may think they’re in competition with each other, but the real monster is the couch. People must be motivated about their fitness to make changes. It is far more likely for them to build or change habits when held accountable.

Getting clients out of the house and into your fitness studio is a challenge most gym owners face. In fact, 95% of fitness studios lose more than 70% of their members. Of the active members, nearly half of them show up less than once a week.

That’s a tough truth to face, but you don’t have to be part of the statistic. Let’s help spread health and fitness as a way of life. By holding clients accountable and ensuring an exceptional experience, your clients will never want to leave.

Identify Value
As a personal trainer, of course you love fitness, but you’ve pushed past the painful stage of building healthy habits long ago. Offer compassion to those that haven’t yet flip the switch and put yourself in their shoes. We all start somewhere. Start by assessing their values and uncover their reason why. Once you identify their purpose you can develop personalized ways to motivate them to reach their goals.

Create Rewards
Giving yourself a pat on the back may work for some. For others, receiving a tangible reward makes a huge difference in motivation. Journalist Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, advises rewards to create a neurological “habit loop,” which gives a cue to trigger behavior. For example, setting your yoga mat by the front door, taking the class, and then treating yourself to a smoothie. It’s also important to have your rewards resonate with your goals. If you lose ten pounds, buy yourself a new pair of athletic shoes instead of a Michael Kors purse.

Build Community
As humans, we crave a sense of belonging. Those that are sitting on the couch, have probably been there for years and struggle with the confidence to get outside of their comfort zone. So rip the bandaid off and turn the uncomfortable into fun, loving family.

The National Bureau of Economic Research recently found that giving new gym members giftcards with $30-60 to workout made almost zero impact on their motivation. It’s the smiling faces, personal recognition, sweaty hugs, and real friendship that people show up for.

Encouraging everyone to be their most healthy, vibrant self is the best way to create lasting motivation. Meet your clients where they are and help them become who they want to be.
